Property tax reduction amendment will be on May ballot
Seniors and Texans with disabilities would get a one-third reduction in school property taxes, just like the rest of the state, if an amendment that passed the Senate and House is approved. The Senate voted 29-0 in favor of the amendment. The House later voted 146-0 calling for that election. The language in the two chambers’ proposals is slightly different, so a final version of the amendment will have to be devised before the election is set.
The Texas Constitution caps property taxes for people with disabilities and homeowners who are at least 65. When the Legislature approved the one-third reduction in school property taxes last year, those groups did not receive a proportionate cut because the constitution had not been changed.
The bulk of the reduction will come this fall. Seniors would get the full reduction this fall if voters approve the amendment in May.
